Places to eat

I went to Iséo for our wedding anniversary (10 years). The food is simply exquisite, a mix of a fusion of Thai and French cuisine. The atmosphere is very good too with full spotlight on the kitchen action. Find it here.

On the expensive end but totally worth it.

Last month the boss also opened a take away version called iséo gourmet near the market square in la Rochelle. The food was just as good as the restaurant for a third of the price:

L’Aunis:

14, Rue St Jean du Pérot
17000 Rochelle (La), France

Went twice so far and not the least disappointed. Food is French but not heavy, right portions, right price and right amount of choice. They have a very reasonable seasonal menu I would totally recommend you eating outside one summer evening and enjoy watching the world go by while eating really good food.

Les Frangins:

The dishes are all written on blackboards and change regularly (something I always find reassuring). The food is unsophisticated and unpretentious yet very scromptuous and served on sturdy pretty plates. The atmosphere is very cosy  and the restaurant lives a minute away from Place Verdun, close to town but away from the busy part of La Rochelle. The owner are lovely and clearly passionate about food.  In short: a gem!

Le Moulin de Verteuil

I already blogged about the Fouée these little stuffed pockets of bread typically Charentais.

Well on a warm Sunday in June we decided to make the journey to The Moulin de Verteuil. Set in the beautiful village of Verteuil, La Charente is queen order a fouée in the lovely restaurant or to take away and eat by the river…

I enjoyed a really nice evening there recently. The restaurant sums up La Rochelle’s charm in its interesting deco, the best is the courtyard garden at the back – almost forgetting  that we were in a restaurant, it has a lovely intimate feel to it. There is a simple card  some might think with limited choice but each dish triggers curiosity. I really enjoyed the fish with pistachios risotto yet I was not sold on the basel madeleine. One thing is sure the chef is having fun. Service was perfect…I definitely recommend the place, there is a clear passion and dedication transpiring from everyone who works there.
