Books
Last modified: April 7, 2008I have decided to start a page dedicated to the books that I am currently reading and enjoy. Simply because my friends always ask me and that way I can direct them directly to my blog when they ask. I also made a pact to myself to read more in french so this will enable me to keep a closer eye on my choices…
I really enjoy the author ’s casual and unpretentious style of writing. Each chapter is a description of what she sees, hears, reads whether in the tube or at home. It reads a bit like a blog and conveys really strong emotions. A great read.
Just finished it. A really good insight on the fascinating character of Marguerite Duras, again I thought it read like a blog. I liked the randomness of its chapters and the sincerity of the author herself.
Petite Anglaise, I enjoy reading her blog and enjoyed the book! I was born and lived 20 years in the very place she describes so well, Belleville, the Buttes Chaumont. I could actually visualize the very place where Petite Anglaise and Mr Frog lived! I look forward to reading more books from Catherine Sanderson.
La Laisse~Francoise Sagan:
A “failed”musician suddenly wakes up after spending 7 years in a totally alienating marriage. ” En laisse ” means on the leash illustrates the dynamic of the couple: a dominating wife controlling every aspects of her pet/husband. A successful hit will suddenly give him a taste of freedom and reveal to what extent his marriage is flawed…
Une Chambre a soi~Virginia Woolf:
A room, means to live and time are the ingredients needed for women who can write to release their talent…not so easy all those years ago as Virginia Woolf demonstrated in that book…a very interesting book.
Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit~Annie Ernaux
A chilling account on the reverse roles of a mother and daughter relationship. This book is a diary of the author at a time when her mother was going through Alzheimer. Her description of this journey into hell is blunt and disconcerting at times but is also a touching tribute to her mother.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo ~ Stieg Larsson
Part one of the Millenium series, my mum bought it for me for my birthday…I am hooked!
Des souris & un homme
Lewis Wingrove aka Nick describes in this book a year dating through a famous online dating agency.
Let’s say he got it sussed and explains with great humour how he made it from virtual to proper dating. I found it a bit reduntant at times but it gave a good insight on the virtual dating scenes.
La femme gelée: Annie Ernaux:
I am a real fan of Annie Ernaux, I love her sharp and often cynical realism on life. Again the author delivers an insight on her life as a child, teenager and the transition that made her become not so easily a wife and a mother. A very touching and sincere account on her feelings towards marriage and motherhood .
La maison du retour~ Jean-Paul Kauffmann
I read this book with trepidation, the author (held hostage for 3 years in Lebanon) describes in an elusive and almost mystical way how his house in Les Landes (France) helped him renew slowly with the outisde world. It is a touching picture of a broken man initially only able to engage with the surrounding nature and wildlife.
